Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Eye World Championships Final Against China’s Top Seeds
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand face China’s top seeds Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning in the BWF World Championships semifinals after securing India a women’s doubles medal in New Delhi.
The Indian duo stormed into the semifinals yesterday after defeating fourth seeds Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian of China 16-21, 21-15 and 21-13.
The victory has assured Treesa and Gayatri of a coveted medal at the prestigious championship. They have also become only the second Indian women’s doubles duo to win a World Championships medal.
Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa were the first Indian combination to achieve the feat when they clinched the bronze in London 15 years ago.
Treesa and Gayatri now face the top-seeded Chinese pair Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning in the semifinal at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, with a place in the final at stake.
